Tolkien influences all of us, but who influenced Tolkien?

Many famous authors have referenced J.R.R. Tolkien as one of the inspirations behind their writing.The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy often top lists of the Best Books of All Time. But who inspired Tolkien? Which authors was he reading when he was working on his literary masterpieces?

Here’s a list of books and authors Tolkien was influenced by:

1) The Book of Wonder by Lord Dunsany

This collection of stories is a must-read for fantasy fans!

2) The Red Fairy Book by Andrew Lang

The Red Fairy Book is the second book in Lang’s twelve fairy books, and includes the stories:  “ The Twelve Dancing Princesses,” “ Rapunzel,” and a version of “ Snow White” called “ Snowdrop.”

3) The Lilac Fairy Book by Andrew Lang

The Lilac Fairy Book is the last of Andrew Lang’ s twelve Fairy Books, and includes the stories: “ The False Prince and the True,” “ The Three Crowns,” and “ The Lady of the Fountain.”

4) The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald

A lonely princess hatches a plan to defeat the goblins living below her kingdom.

5) The Marvellous Land of Snergs by E. A. Wyke-Smith

You’re dying to figure out what Snergs are, right?! In this magical story, snergs are the creatures that inhabit a forest realm. It was a favourite bedtime story of Tolkien!

6)  The Black Douglas by S. R. Crockett

This is the story of the Earl of Douglas’s struggle to keep his land, and protect the fate of Scotland from his enemies. Great for historical fiction fans!

7) The House of the Wolfings by William Morris

Another classic! This is the story of the Wolfings’s battle with and ultimate triumph over invading Roman legions.
